ALLEGORY OF ARCHITECTURE
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
127 x 97 cm.
In profiled gold frame with plastic flowers.
A composition typical of the baroque painter from Den Bosch: an allegorical female figure sits in a raised position, separated from the viewer's room by round steps, showing a plan of a domed representative building on the one hand, while in the other hand she presents the tools that generally characterize the allegory of architecture. Two putti convey a sense of space out of the picture field, while classical architecture with its fluted columns and Corinthian capitals leads diagonally into the picture field, which is bordered backwards by contemporary buildings. In this way, antiquity is thematized as a model, which may serve as a model for contemporary architects. The unsigned painting is well comparable with other paintings, which are listed at the RKD in The Hague as being from the hand of Thulden. First of all, a painting is to be mentioned here, which is kept in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper under Inv.No. 873-1-238. (1220331) (2) (13)
