Spanischer Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts
YOUNG HERDER
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
140 x 102 cm.
In decorative partly gilded splendid frame.
In mountainous landscape a small shepherd boy sitting in poor clothing with white torn shirt, dark knee breeches and bare feet. Behind him in close-up view a large grey cow with horns, to the left a brown calf and two sheep surrounding the boy. In the foreground a lying calabash and a large shiny onion. In the background the blue sky in the light of the reddish shimmering setting sun. The boy, with dark hair, has his head slightly lowered and seems to be looking quite lost at his hands, which he has folded in front of his chest. Picturesque, harmonious reproduction in reduced colouring, whereby the depiction of the child is entirely reminiscent of youth depictions by the famous Spanish painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682). Minor frame damage. (1220762) (3) (18)
