RAUB DER PROSERPINA
and
RAUB DER OREITHYIA
Height: approx. 49 cm and approx. 56 cm.
Base diameter: 27 cm.
Pair of bronze sculptures, each on a round base. The first sculpture, The Robbery of Proserpina, is in Roman mythology the story of the abduction of the daughter of Demeter by Hades, the ruler of the underworld. She was picking flowers when she was abducted by Hades. The sculpture shows Hades bearded, with a jagged crown on his head, and in his left hand he holds a two-pronged spear. With his right arm he has clasped Proserpina, who has bent her left arm upwards and is begging for mercy. In her downward stretched arm she holds above a pedestal a long wreath of flowers that reaches down to the ground.
The second sculpture shows Boreas, in Greek mythology the personification of the North Wind, who is currently abducting the nymph Oreithyia, the daughter of the mythical King of Attica. He is said to have wrapped her in a cloud when she danced on the banks of the Ilisos and to have floated off with her to his homeland. He is depicted with wings and thick puffed-up cheeks. He has both arms wrapped around the nymph, who fiercely resists the abduction and has stretched out her left arm upwards. Partially rubbed, especially the face of the boreal, the nymph's left arm is attached. (12207425) (18)
