Over an old paved road flanked on the right and left by oriental buildings with merchants, the view falls on a large wooden oriental gate, through which one reaches a palace with towers and minarets. In front of this locked gate two horsemen, who are probably waiting for entrance. On the right-hand side of the picture, in front of the house with round arches on the upper floor, some women carrying large jugs on their heads and two seated women in dark blue and pink robes with headgear. On the left another merchant in front of the building and two seated men, one of whom has left his white shoes. The warm sunlight falls from an invisible source on this market scene from the top left and illuminates not only the gate and the palace behind it, but also the right side of the picture with the veiled women and the building behind it. The high sky in a predominantly grey colouring, slightly merging into blue. Splendid harmonious representation, conveying the mood of an oriental summer day. (12213519) (18)
