1st-2nd century AD. A glass disc weight of flattened circular form; rounded edges; pontil mark folded into a floral motif. Cf. Property of a New York gentleman, acquired on the London art market; previously with Bonhams, London, New Bond Street, 1 May 2013, lot 213; formerly in a private collection in Massachusetts, USA acquired in 1976; accompanied by copies of the relevant Bonhams catalogue pages. Such glass discs were used for a variety of purposes, including jar lids, mirror backs, windowpanes, and weights. Plain discs of various sizes and colours also served as game pieces.
