23rd-20th century BC. A bronze discoid stamp seal with heraldic eagle to both sides, accompanied by a typed and signed note by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 33 x 34 x 8mm. This is round, with scalloped outer edge, with flat face and convex back with loop handle in the middle. The design on the face shows a heraldic eagle with head sideways at the top, wings spread, and tail feathers down. Around the eagle is a snake, apparently caught in the eagle's beak. The design is repeated in low relief on the back, except that the snake is replaced by a band of scallops with linear decoration. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c.2300-2000 B.C. It is a distinguished example for its modelled relief, and in quite good condition. The metal has been conserved.' 19 grams, 34mm (1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection number T-736, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
