An important Iranian mortar Cast bronze with high copper content, copper inlays, brownish red patina, gilding, traces of green corrosion. Polygonal facetted vessel on round foot with corresponding rim. With a rounded moulding to the centre. Each face decorated with stylised foliage in two rows. The rim with Kufic calligraphy and four teardrop motifs in relief. Verdigris mainly to the bottom, the underside of the upper edge and inside, a repaired crack due to usage. H 18, D 24,3 cm. Weight 6.6 kg. Attributed to Khorasan, 12th C. Literature An identical mortar without the gilding in the Victoria & Albert Museums in London, museum number 948-1886. Bedeutender iranischer Mörser Bronzeguss, mit hohem Kupferanteil, Kupfertauschierung, braunrote Patina, Vergoldung, Anflug von Grünspan. Polygonal facettiert, zylindrisch, auf Scheibenfuß, mit entsprechend ausgestelltem Lippenrand. Umlaufender Mittelwulst. Auf jeder Facette stilisierte Blattmotive in zwei Reihen. Auf dem Lippenrand kufische Kalligrafie und vier Relieftränen. Grünspan vor allem auf dem Boden, der Unterseite des oberen Rands und innen, Reparatur eines Risses durch Gebrauch in der unteren Wandung. H 18, D 24,3 cm. Gewicht 6,6 kg.
