In his busy compositions, the Roman still life painter Antonio Tibaldi pays particular attention to the accurate depiction of costly items such as opulent suits of armour, vessels of precious metals, clocks, and carpets. Many of these motifs can be found in similar arrangements in numerous other works by the artist, such as the knight's helmet with its violet plume or the bulbous vessel in the left background. The present work relates most closely to two paintings sold by Christie's (London, 14.12.1990, lot 20) and Semenzato (Milan, 23.09.1990, lot 815) (cf. Gianluca & Ulisse Bocchi: Pittori di Natura Morta a Roma. Artisti italiani 1630-1750, Viadana 2005, p. 475, illus. AT.2 and p. 481 illus. AT.9). Der römische Stilllebenmaler Antonio Tibaldi konzentriert sich in seinen zumeist dicht gedrängten Kompositionen auf die Wiedergabe kostbarer Objekte wie Prunkrüstungen, Behältnisse aus Edelmetall, Uhren oder Teppiche. Einige Motive finden sich sehr ähnlich in mehreren seiner Werke, darunter der mit violetten Federn verzierte Ritterhelm oder das bauchig geschwungene Gefäß im linken Hintergrund. Unserem Werk am nächsten stehen zwei Gemälde, die bei Christie's (London, 14.12.1990, Lot 20) bzw. Semenzato (Mailand, 23.9.1990, Lot 815) versteigert wurden (siehe Gianluca u.
