Description

A Chelsea octagonal dish, circa 1756, painted in shades of green with a central flower spray within a swag border suspended from a gilt dentil bordered rim, red anchor mark, paper label with legend Old Chelsea Dish, decorated with flowers in green festoon property of the late J Haslam Derby, 22cm in length The estate of Christopher and Rosemary Warren. Perhaps formally in the possession of John Haslam of Derby? The latter was apprenticed to Robert Bloor in 1822 and as John Twitchett tells in his 1980 publication Derby Porcelain on page 242, Haslam therefore had first hand knowledge of the Derby workmen during his life time and his book The Old Derby China Factory: The Workmen and Their Productions is still regarded as one of the standard works on Derby. No doubt this connection to one of great figures in the history of English ceramics was what interested the Warrens in acquiring this piece. Condition Report: Very shallow rim chip to one end.
