弗里德兰战役爆发于1807年6月，它是拿破仑战争中法军与第四次反法同盟军队在弗里德兰进行的决战。交战双方为由法兰西帝国皇帝拿破仑带领的法军以及由俄罗斯帝国的本尼格森伯爵所带领的俄军。最终法军获得决定性胜利，而俄军战败后则沿着维纳河与尼曼河混乱地溃逃。第四次反法同盟由此瓦解，从此拿破仑胜利的光环上又多了一颗明珠。油画描述的是拿破仑皇帝在向乌迪诺将军下战术指令，在他们中间的是南苏蒂将军，在拿破仑皇帝右后方的是米歇尔内伊元帅。
