Dated 1652 AD. John Hull's mint, Boston. Obv: oak tree with MASATHVSETS legend with normal S's from 12 o'clock and with pellet-rosette at start. Rev: date over III mark of value with NEW ENGLAND legend from 12 o'clock with pellet-rosette at start. KM# 8; see Salmon 1A-1B; see Noe 29-34. 0.90 grams. ("). Found near Maldon, Essex, UK, 2020; with extract from 'Treasure Hunting' magazine, August 2020 issue, p.21 reporting on the find. Although all are dated 1652, the tree series of Massachusetts colonial coins were produced over a period of time with the oak tree issue being generally dated to circa 1660-1667 AD; there are several dies known for the threepence with the definitive study so far by Dr Christopher J. Salmon, who has listed many varieties. Offered with an image of another, better, example from the same dies for comparison.
