Circa 1682 AD. St. Patrick's farthing (or Mark Newby farthing) in copper with brass splash at crown, undated, uncertain mint (Dublin?) under Charles II (1645-85"). Obv: King David kneeling, playing harp with FLOREAT REX legend. Rev: St Patrick holding shamrock and crozier with QVIESCAT PLEBS legend. KM# 1; Breen 208, D&F 340; S. 6569. 4.68 grams. ("). This is a very rare undated coin which was minted in Dublin around 1675. Originally intended for use in Ireland the coins were taken to New Jersey by Mark Newby, a Dublin merchant, in 1681, who used the coins in trade with the native Indians. They were made legal tender by the New Jersey General Assembly in 1682 thus are included in coinage of New Jersey. Now kept in some American wallets as a symbol of good luck. [No Reserve]
