A William & Mary walnut and crewel work inset fire screen, circa 1690, the arched crewel work panel decorated with meandering floral vines, surmounted by a pierced scrolling acanthus carved cresting, flanked by turned uprights joined by a turned stretcher, on scroll moulded downswept feet, 134cm high, 72cm wide, 41cm deep Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use old splits and chips. some old losses, some old worm/ damage/ holes to a relatively minor extent overall but has caused fragmentary loss to the uppermost part of the leaf carved terminal at the top of the screen. The crewel work panel with repairs and some losses (see images) and a small number of holes (see images) Some fading, discoloration and dirt / staining to the panel. The crewel work panel basically consists of two carefully stitched together halves (see images) The later paper lining to the reverse of the panel now almost entirely lost/ torn away and only glued down elements to the timber frame to the reverse remain. From the reverse of the frame it can be seen that some thin elements of timber have been glued and nailed down to secure the structure and screwed in metal brackets have been applied to the upper corners of the reverse of the frame also. The thin stretcher of timber across the reverse of the frame is likely a later addition/ replacement and is attached with a small screw at each end. A section of turning above the left hand foot section appears to have been replaced and has been put together with old elements (see images) . This appears to be an old replacement but is lighter in colour generally. The screen is generally of solid structure and stands well however the joint of the left foot to the upright would benefit from being re-secured.
