An early Victorian silver shaped oblong inkstand in Dutch taste by Edward, Edward junior, John & William Barnard, London 1840, with a central detachable naturalistic taperstick over a circular aperture, flanked by two wells, the cylindrical glass liners with silver covers, the base with a moulded rim, twin shell and foliate handles, on four openwork naturalistic feet, presentation engraved 'The Gift of the Rev'd Cr. Wordsworth, DD, Master of Trinity Col. Cam. to E. & D. Quillinan July 6. 1841' and a crest, 38cm (15in) across handles, 1568g (5.4 oz) The Rev'd Christopher Wordsworth (1774-1846) was an English divine and scholar, the youngest brother of the poet William Wordsworth. Edward Quillinan (1791-1851) was an English poet who was a son-in-law and defender of William Wordsworth and a translator of Portuguese poetry. This inkstand would have been a wedding present on the occasion of his marriage to William's daughter Dora.
