A George II mahogany bureau bookcase, circa 1740, the cavetto moulded cornice above a moulded panel door opening to a shelved interior, the lower section with a hinged fall opening to a tooled leather inset writing surface, and an arrangement of small drawers and pigeon holes around a central cupboard door, above two short and three long graduated drawers, on shaped bracket feet, 202cm high, 81cm wide, 47cm deep Provenance: purchased from Stow Antiques, 17th July 1992, £8,180 Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. Some later tape applied to the back panels of the top. Leather inset surface to the fall is later. some old repairs. Supporting block to back of one front foot is detached but present. Some evidence of old worm. Some alteration to the positioning of the escutcheons and handles. Handles and escutcheons appear original. Locks have been replaced and vary from one another. Key present and operates the lock to the fall and door. Fall has moved or warped slightly resulting in the 'teeth' of the lock not not meeting the catch. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
