A Louis XVI Aubusson portico tapestry in the manner of Jean-Baptiste Huet, last quarter 18th century, woven in wool and silk, the central trophy with military attributes, surrounded by a floral garland and suspended from a ribbon, flanked by flowering columns, with a scene of an eagle attacking a hare below, later backed, 264cm high, 223cm wide For a similar pair of narrower panels with trophies and animal scenes to designs by Huet, see Christie's Paris, 25 August 2018, EUR 4,375. Condition Report: The tapestry bears the usual minor marks and nicks overall consistent with age. There is a handful of small horizontal tears particularly along colour lines, as is to be expected, though overall the textile is sturdy. There are areas of old reweaving to the cream ground (particularly far edges of tapestry), one of the column bases and some of the fluting. There are areas of cream ground to the far edges (beyond the column capitals) which appear lighter than most other areas, these are possibly rewoven. There is some slight discolouration and greying, though the pinks, blues and greens are quite vibrant particularly in the trophy and columns. Some ripping to later backing.
