After Louis Leopold Chambard (French, 1811-1895), a large patinated bronze model of a youth called 'Le Bucheron', portrayed nude with a drape across the raised right leg, and bending a bunch of twigs with his knee, on a waisted circular plinth with plaquette inscribed LE BUCHERON FABLE DE LA FONTAINE, and signed Chambard to the maquette, 85cm high, the base circa 25cm wide The present bronze takes its inspiration from Jean de la Fontaine's fable of 'Le Bucheron et la Mort' (The Woodcutter and Death), first published during the 17th century. A cast of this model was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 25 September 2007, lot 516 (£2,750).
