Emmanuel Fremiet (1824-1910), a rare patinated bronze model of a washing cat, on a spreading oval base, inscribed E. FREMIET to the maquette, 14cm high, 21cm wide Provenance: British Private Collection Acquired by the present owner at Sotheby's London, Nineteenth Century Decorative Works of Art and Furniture, 23 June 1983, lot 129 Emmanuel Fremiet trained in the studio of renowned sculptor Francois Rude, whose wife Sophie was Fremiet's aunt. He is best-known for his monumental sculpture, such as the gilt-bronze monument to Joan of Arc at the Place de Rivoli in Paris. He was however also considered an important Animalier, even succeeding Antoine-Louis Barye as Professor of Drawing at the Museum of Natural History. During his lifetime he was made a 'Grand Officier' of the French Legion d'Honneur, as well as an Associate of the Royal Academy, London.
