The cup bears two royal cyphers. One cypher is the letter A surmounted by a crown, likely the personal cypher of Adelaide, either as Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen or as Duchess of Clarence after her marriage to William IV. The other cypher, the initials CM surmounted by a crown, has not been identified. The cup was made in Stuttgart, Germany, in the late 18th or early 19th century. It may have been brought to England by the Princess or potentially acquired by her when she and William resided in Germany prior to his reign as king. H. of cup to top of handle: 11 cm (4 3.8 in.) Dia. of saucer: 15 cm (5 7/8 in.) A gift from Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV (r: 1830-1837) and have been passed down from generation to generation through the family of the original recipient.
