Y Follower of Simon Troger (Austrian, 1693-1768), a pair of Tyrolean wood, ivory and glass inset models of performers, each portrayed wearing a costume with ruff and buttons and wearing a draped headdress, one playing the lute and the other striding with a sword to his side, each on a rectangular base, each approximately 26cm high Tyrolean sculptor Simon Troger spent most of his career in Munich, where he ran a productive workshop and counted the Electors of Bavaria and Saxony among his clientele. He was best known for his bi-colour figures, which dramatically juxtapose pale ivory with darker soft- or fruitwood, and sometimes metal. While Troger is known to have created many mythological and Religious groups, he and his workshop also often sculpted rustic or genre figures, such as the musician and performer presented here.
