A Charles II carved limewood wall mirror, circa 1680, 75cm high, 63cm wide Provenance: Private Collection, The Manor House, Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire For a related carved limewood mirror of the period see, Christie's, London, 26th January 2011, The Gothik Pavilion - A Private Collection from Belgravia, Lot 10 (£22,500). A closely related example of mirror is illustrated in Graham Child, World Mirrors 1650-1900, Sotheby's Publications, 1990, page 63, figure 13. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips. Evidence of old worm. Mirror plate is a later replacement. It has some losses, grey spots, bloom and scratches. Rubbing and losses to grey/cream painted surface. The surface appears to have been gilded at some point. Elements detached and re-glued, including to; head of bird to lower edge, beak to bird at one side, and head of one cherub to the cresting. Later supporting block to reverse. Old screw holes to reverse from previous hanging fixtures. Some glue residue visible to corner blocks of the back.
