AN AVRO 504K PROPELLER, c.1914-1920, a good large two-blade airscrew for the Avro 504-Type biplane, of laminated hardwood construction, retaining original doped fabric protective covering to blades, with brass sheathing to leading edges, variously marked, inscribed Drg. No. 28937/1 - Avro 504K - Mono Gnome, with AID stamps and dated 1925, 270cm long, together with an Avro Official press photograph of a 5040 type from which the propeller could have been removed in the 1930s (2) The Avro 504 was introduced in 1913 and was quickly taken up by the Royal Flying Corps as a trainer and observation machine; robust and versatile it remained in general service as trainer until the late 1920s, and widely for civilian use as a joy-rider and for stunt displays. The legendary RAF WWII ace, Douglas Bader, took instructions and would have had his first solo flight in just such a machine.
