Spanish school of the 18th century."Saint Joseph and the Child".Oil on canvas. Relined.19th century frame.Measurements: 44 x 36.5 cm; 49.5 x 43 cm (frame). In this canvas the author depicts an image of devotional character, stripped of practically all iconographic attributes, except for the flowered rod of St. Joseph, in order to project a close and naturalistic image, which moves the spirit of the faithful and is close to reality, thus emphasizing the humanity of Jesus. The Child appears on the lap of St. Joseph, who appears looking directly at the Child, integrating him into the composition. Beyond this foreground, almost entirely occupied by the monumental figure of St. Joseph, we see a landscape of classical heritage, dominated by a golden atmosphere, open towards the distant mountainous horizon on the left side and closed on the right, following baroque models. In fact, at the formal level we find a great influence of the Sevillian baroque, especially Murillo and his followers. Hence the soft treatment of faces and flesh tones, the balanced chromatism and classicism of figures and background, and also the softly contrasted lighting, which brings naturalism to the scene.
