A wood netsuke of a shishi (Chinese mythological lion dog) and cub By Kokei, early 19th century The adult shishi standing on a high rock, watching as her cub tumbles to the ground, the wood slightly worn and bearing a good patina; signed Kokei. 3.8cm (1½in). Footnotes: リザーブ設定無し 木彫根付 獅子の子落し 銘「虎渓」 19世紀前期 The subject illustrated is known as Shishi no ko otoshi.
