A black-lacquer ryoshibako (document box) with en-suite cover 17th century Of classic rounded rectangular form with a roiro ground, lacquered on the cover with a scene of ducks in a stream with ancient willow trees on each shore, while a duck flies overhead, the sides with similar designs, the design interspersed with nine maru ni hidari manji mon (crest in the form of a left-facing manji character in a circular reserve), all in gold takamaki-e, the interior of roiro, lined with brocade of a scrolling floral design, the rims mounted with pewter; unsigned. 21.2cm x 33cm x 26.3cm (8 3/8in x 13in x 10 3/8in). (2). Footnotes: リザーブ設定無し 丸に卍紋入柳に鴨図蒔絵料紙箱 無銘 17世紀 Provenance: Malcolm Fairley, London, 2008. Wrangham collection, no.2293. The mon appears to be that of the Hachisuka family, as recorded in V. F. Weber, Ko-ji Ho-ten, Dictionnaire à l'usage des amateurs et collectionneurs d'objets d'art japonais et chinois, Paris, Chez l'Auteur, 1923, vol.2, Appendix IV, p.80, no.411. However, the origins of the family are disputed and the mon was also used by the Yokoyama family of which the Hachisuka may have been an offshoot.
