David Bates (born 1952) Magnolia II inscribed 'Bates' (on the lower right edge) bas relief bronze with polychrome 31 x 24 x 3in Executed in 1998-99. Footnotes: Provenance Baldwin Gallery, Aspen, Colorado. Private collection, California, from the above. Important Texas Neo-Expressionist realist figure and narrative artist David Bates works in a wide variety of painted and sculptural mediums. Whether in two or three dimensions, as with the bronze bas relief Magnolia II, Bates builds his surfaces with heavy impasto to add texture and movement to each work, and uses heavy outlining in a nod to traditional Folk Art. The Magnolia is a frequent motif for the artist. His mother, a former art student with a passion for flower arranging, is an influence for 'his exuberant flower still lifes...in a monograph of Bates's work, Justin Spring writes that his flowers 'are among the most hefty and energized in the history of American painting. They are also among the most playful; in many instances they seem to possess all the charm of a well-loved pet.' 1 In Magnolia II, a single dazzling magnolia blossom dominates a floral arrangement presented on a table top in a thin, tall vase. The arcing line of the table's edge curves behind the vase, interrupted only by a bulbous lemon. Magnolia II is executed in a limited palette of whites, browns and blacks with the bold folksy outlining typical of the artist. 1 J.
