Eugeniu (Eugen) Voinescu (1842-1909), important Romanian marine painter. While studying in Paris, he met Gustave Courbet, who encouraged him to devote himself to painting and to observe the landscape directly. In 1869 Voinescu was awarded a medal at the Paris Salon. In 1883-1888 he was resident in Odessa, where he met Ivan Aivazovsky, under whose influence he created his poetic, finely felt marine paintings.
