Local Interest - A Victorian 19th Century Victorian Ashley Down Orphanage white cotton sampler worked by Alice Ellen Usher NW (North Wing), Ashley Down Bristol 1873. Hand stitched in the familiar red thread creating detailed motifs, alphabet and numbers through the tiny stitches. The alphabet repeated numerous times in various fonts with central bible and many repeating geometric patterns. An unframed example well kept and in good condition. Measures approx; 34cm x 32cm. The New Orphan Houses in Ashley Down, Bristol were more commonly known as the Muller Homes and by 1870 the five houses were home to some 2000 children
