An important 19th Century piece of Shakespeariana - A circa 1860 hand carved Mulberry wood goblet reputedly carved from the wood of William Shakespeare's Mulberry tree by John Marshall, carver of Stratford On Avon. The upper rim carved with Ben Jonson's eulogy: 'He lived not for an age but for all time'. The body carved with gothic scrolls and acanthus leaves with prickwork and the column expertly turned with a central carved baluster knop. The lower rim notated: 'Shakespeare's Mulberry Wood from New Place', underside incised: 'J. Marshall Carver Stratford on Avon'. Measures approx; 22cm x 9.5cm. Condition; some minor chips / marks to the rim, minor marks in a few places to the body and some minor splits to the body and base. Overall in good condition. After the destruction of Shakespeare's family home by its owner the Rev. Francis Gastrell in 1759, it became a natural hunting ground for souvenirs. In the following century, John Marshall (d. 1887), a carver and antiquarian in Stratford-on-Avon, used wood from the property, including beams from the barn and the remnants of a mulberry tree said to have been planted by Shakespeare, to create carved artefacts for his shop.
