A SET OF TEN VICTORIAN MAHOGANY AND RED LEATHER UPHOLSTERED CHAIRS IN THE MANNER OF A. W. N. PUGIN, CIRCA 1845 The leather backs stamped in gilt with a monogram ?'IHL', the brass studs of unusual central domed form each 90cm high, 48cm wide, 58cm deep These chairs are similar in design to the oak House of Lords Portcullis chairs designed in the 1840s by A. W. N. Pugin and made by Gillow and Holland and Son. Houses of Parliament chairs, minus the portcullis were also supplied during the 1840s by both firms to several private houses for which Pugin was the architect. Not all the Houses of Parliament chairs had a gold portcullis stamped into the leather, instead some had an entwined monogram VR for Victoria Regina. This set of mahogany chairs reflect the desirability of all the above features of the Pugin chairs, blended with the fashionable turned and fluted supports of the time.
