An unusual pair of George III sterling silver candlesticks, London 1790 by John Wakelin & William Taylor (reg. 25th Sep 1776) Circular bases with fluted cavetto edge raising to a fluted tapering column with stylised leaf base, the upper section a band of Vitruvian scroll below a leafy calyx to detachable ball knop capital section with everted circular section with pierced galleried edge. Each with a removable sconce with pierced galleried edge. Each engraved with an impaled coat of arms in a shield shape cartouche below a crest of a griffin’s head erased collared. Each fully marked to the base edge, the detachable sections unmarked, the capital and sconces scratched 1 and 2, the bases with scratch weights 22”0 and 22”9 respectively. Height – 31.8 cm / 12.55 inches Weight – 1221 grams / 39.26 ozt The arms a probably a variant of Browne impaling Sabine quartering another Probably for Henry Browne Esq (1754-1830) of Portland Place, Middlesex, who married on the 21st June 1797 Caroline Susannah Sabine (1771-1842) the daughter of Joseph Sabine (1743-1814) and Sarah Hunt (1758-1788). Henry Browne Esq is listed in Schrager, L., The Royal and Aristocratic Patronage of Wakelin and Tayler, 1776-92, (2006) The journal of the silver society, no 21, p.87-104.
