Description

Two Autograph Letters to Osbert Sitwell from Sacheverell Sitwell, Rome, 1950, and Georgia Sitwell, Weston Hall, 1954. comprises: the first letter - Autograph Letter to Osbert Sitwell, from Sacheverell Sitwell, Rome, 1950. Sacherverell writes to his older brother of his financial worries and how hard it has been trying to keep things going, 1pp. 19 lines, written in blue ink, to a single leaf of blue notepaper, from 23 Via Lisbona, Rome, 19 May, 1950, 'My Dearest Osbert, I have just been told by Ralph Howard . . confirming the offer of £2600 for the estate, and I want to write to thank you immediately. I think it is a very generous offer. I am afraid these awful worries which have made both of us ill were inevitable. I suppose I should never have gone to Weston to live, in the first place still less, ever married and had two children. Latterly, when the income was so low, of course it was impossible, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, my darling, but at the same time I cannot forget the interpretation Philip Frere has put on all my actions, . . . when I have been made ill trying to keep things going. I know you understand this, and have not taken these things at their worst interpretation as you might have done . . . Best love, darling / your affect brother / Sachie'; the second letter - Autograph Letter to Osbert Sitwell from Georgia Sitwell, Georgia updates her brother-in-law with snippets of news from Weston Hall. 2pp., approx. 50 lines, including a 5 line P.S. to top right corner, written to both sides of a single leaf in blue ink, from Weston Hall, March 15th, 1954', Darling Osbert We were of course thrilled to hear from you . . .But you know how it is when there is not much to say . . .uneventful winter poisoned by the expense and inconvenience of going onto the mains water supply, the hideous details of which I wont bore you with . . . The attacks on Edith have been very upsetting & Sachie was quite distracted, not knowing what to do about it . . .so typical that the pack of hounds should set about her when her absence made them feel she was most vulnerable. Christabel has given us Rex's lovely little painting of Weston which really is too generous for words especially considering that she has had to sell a lot of things to make ends meet . . . We are going to Spain again, leaving on April 21st by which time poor Francis should be swallowed up by the navy . . . We have seen Penelope and Reresby once or twice with moderate success, Sachie still cant take her, she wont unbend an inch even to me . . . Please give my love to David + to Billy, Fondest love from your devoted Georgia'.Provenance: The Sitwell Family Library, Weston Hall.
