A WILLIAM IV SILVER LARGE SHAPED CIRCULAR SALVER BY PAUL STORR LONDON 1836, STAMPED STORR & MORTIMER 61 The raised gadrooned and foliate rim with shells and rocaille work, an engraved broad band of flowers, foliage and shells centred by an armorial with a motto Esse Quam Videri, 66cm (26in) diameter, 6002 grams (193 oz)The paternal arms of this complete armorial achievement belong to the family of TURNOR of Stoke Rochford near Grantham, Lincolnshire. There are a number of branches to the TURNOR, TURNOUR and sometimes TURNER family this however is confirmed by the crest which includes a lion crowned in eastern style and is unique to the family branch at Stoke Rochford.The owners of the TURNOR arms are:Edmund TURNOR (1754-1829) who married firstly in 1795 Elizabeth BROKE and secondly in 1803 Dorothea TUCKER. His sole male heir was Christopher TURNOR (1809-1886) who married in 1837 Caroline FINCH-HATTON. These three maternal lines cover the period to 1886 however none have heraldry as described in the engraving. The use of griffins passant on this piece is common to the heraldry of the FINCH (-HATTON) family and it is suspected that the maternal arms here are the result of some unofficial self-differencing of the original FINCH arms. As a result Christopher TURNOR and his wife Caroline FINCH-HATTON are likely to be the owner of the arms in this instance.
