Description

Pair of colonial Bureaus; mid 18th century. Lacquered wood. They have repainted lids and missing supports. One of them has lost a bronze handle. Measurements: 125 x 99 x 60 cm (x2). Pair of colonial bureaus that follow the aesthetics of the English models adapted to the colonial techniques. The pieces present a similar design of rectangular base in which four legs of bracket type are arranged, plus an applique located in the central zone of the front of the furniture that presents a design as a gable, but that does not get to establish itself as a point of support more, reason why its presence is merely decorative. Regarding the body, this is structured in four registers defined by a single drawer. Each drawer has a geometric profile design, adorned with gilded bronze appliqués; two houses located at each end, and a lock located in the center of each drawer. The main structure gives way to a hinged door, which allows it to be used as a desk. Inside, there is a compartmentalized space with a glossy, unlacquered wood finish. The interior space is divided into two sections; a lower one with three drawers and an upper one. In the lower section, the drawers have missing handles, and a symmetrical design, with identical drawers located on the sides and a smaller one in the center whose profile stands out for its wavy shape. As for the upper zone, this is made up of a filigree that adopts a warped ornamentation that leaves three small openings, the lateral ones being of equal dimensions and the central one smaller, in harmony with the lower section. Once the lid of the upper prismatic body is closed, a decoration based on classical motifs can be appreciated, with a symmetrical structure arranged around a large central border, starring a kind of cornucopia from which numerous flowers emanate. The rest of the design is structured in geometric sections in whose interior are located vegetal and geometric elements. The corners of the lid stand out for their golden vegetal details, which stand out against the dark background of the lacquered finish of the piece of furniture. As for the body, it also presents an ornamentation of vegetal elements conceived as a horro vacui, both on the front and on the sides where you can see a clear wear that does not allow to appreciate the decoration in all its splendor. Dimensions 125 x 99 x 60 cm (x2).
