12th-13th century AD. A Baltic socketted javelin head with barbs and tapering round-section shank for insertion into a wooden shaft. See for a similar specimen Nicolle, D., 'Raiders of the Ice War' in Military Illustrated, March 1996, no.94, pp.26-29, fig.p.28 and Toroptsev, A., Kievan Rus, Moscow, 2001 (In Russian), pp.120-121, fig.2. 168 grams, 25.5cm (10"). Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. Lithuanian and Baltic infantry mostly fought with spears and axes, but barbed javelins are also present in their graves. Spears and javelins were often purchased from arm traders, though equipment was also captured in battle. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
