Description
Translation provided by Youdao
9th century AD. An iron spearhead with tubular socket, slender leaf-shaped blade with raised median ridge. See Hjardar, K. and Vike, V., Vikings at war, Oxford-Philadelphia, 2016, pp.175 and 178, type A spears; p.160, spearhead from Torsdal, Bamble, in Telemark. 180 grams, 23cm (9"). Property of a Preston, UK, gentleman; formerly in the private collection of a Buckinghamshire gentleman; acquired on the UK art market before 2000. The spear belongs to type A of the first main group of Viking swords, the so-called Frankish spearheads, which occur between 750 and 950 AD, but mainly in the 8th and 9th centuries. The Mediterranean influence is still evident in the foliate shape of the blade. [No Reserve] Condition Report Fair condition.
