9th-11th century AD. An Eastern European forged iron spearhead with split conical socket, lozenge-section shaft and squared head, hole for fixing rivet at the base of the socket. See similar specimen in Vitlianov, S., ???????????????? ??????????, ?????, 1996 (Ancient Bulgarian armament, Sofia, 1996, in Bulgarian), pl.VII, no.10, from Veliki Preslav. 340 grams, 41cm (16"). Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. The spear belongs to the type III of the Vitlianov classification. This kind of spearhead was used by the Romans as well as by their Slavic and Bulgarian enemies, and their length can be linked to a use as a thrusting spear for heavy infantry. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
