A GILT BRONZE ‘KARANA MUDRA’ FRAGMENTARY ARM, MING DYNASTY
China, 1368-1644. This gesture, also known as tarjani mudra, expels demons, and removes obstacles such as sickness or negative thoughts. It is performed by raising the thumb, index and little finger, thereby folding the remaining fingers. Skillfully rendered as bent left forearm and hand, the wrist adorned with a plain bracelet below a small vajra in relief to the lower forearm incised with two further vajras.
Provenance: UK trade.
Condition: Extensive old wear, few small losses and dents, shallow surface scratches. The hollow cast arm was additionally fitted with a wooden core for stabilization some time ago. Fine patina overall, displaying remarkably well.
