A LARGE SANDSTONE HEAD OF BUDDHA, POST-ANGKOR PERIOD
Cambodia, 13th-15th century. The serene face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes below elegantly curved brows, a broad nose, and full lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by long pendulous earlobes, the hair arranged in tight curls surmounted by the domed ushnisha surrounded by three rows of stylized lotus petals.
Provenance: From an old German private collection.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, losses, minor nicks and scratches, signs of weathering and erosion. Ancient lacquer coating, probably from the 19th century or earlier, with remnants of gilt.
Dimensions: Height 42 cm (excl. base) and 67 cm (incl. base)
