FIVE BLOWN TEMPERED GLASS SIMPLE BAROMETERSPHILLIP COLLINS, LATE 20th CENTURprising a tear-drop shaped 'thunder bottle' with slender spout and spension ring; two 'Collins Patent Table Barometers', of differing size but each of cylindrical form surmounted with a bulb issuing a downward helical tube with open end submerged in dyed water at the base; a storm glass of cylindrical footed form inscribed P.R. Collins, Merton - Devon and with vertical spout; and a Santorio pattern thermoscope formed as a bulb above long open-ended tube inserted into a narrow cylindrical cistern, (5).The thermoscope 35.5cm (21ins) high, 11.5cm (4.5ins) diameter at the base.Provenance: The reserve retail stock of Barometer World Meum, Merton, Devon.The instruments in the current lot are designed to visually indicate changes in barometric pressure. The thunder bottle is a traditional Dutch design which when dramatic drop in pressure occurs fluid will be 'sucked' out of the spout. The design of the 'thermoscope' is taken from illtrations by Santorio Santorio (1561-1636) held by the Wee Trtees, whilst the 'Collins Patent Table Barometer' is a model developed to show the change in pressure through movement amplified in a helical tube.
