After serving his National Service in the Royal Signals Leslie Paton went to work at Plymouth Dockyard servicing and repairing s clocks, chronometers and other timepieces. In addition to this he undertook some contract work to maintain 'clocking-in' clocks and related factory timepieces which sparked his interest in electrical horology. After moving back to London he retrained as a draughtsman and worked for apany in Enfield up until his retirement. During his retirement Paton became actively involved in the Electrical Horology Group of the Antiquarian Horological Society and presented lectures relating to steels and their e in clockmaking. His particular interest was for high precision electro-magnetic regulators which led him to the research of the Rsian horologist F.M. Fedchenko whose work on Isochrono Pendulum Spension were the subject of an article published by Paton in the 1990's. The current lot is the start of a long-term project that Leslie Paton was undertaking to create his own high-precision free-pendulum timepiece most likely incorporating an isochrono pendulum spension based on Fedchenko's principles. The Dial engraved by him is testament to the skills learnt as a teenager and this would have appeared to be his starting point for the project. Sadly Leslie Paton was unable to progress with his vision as he developed an aggressive cancer and passed away in 1998 aged 69. Although the current lot appears to only be the start of a long-term project it will hopefully spark the interest of someone who shares a similar interest and would like to take it on and see Leslie Paton's vision throu
