A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SMALL LONGCASE REGULATOR WITH FIRED ENAMEL DIAL AND CENTRE-SECONDSJOHN STEGER, LONDON, CIRCA 1780The substantial four knopped pillar movement with tapered plates enclosing five-wheel train with Harrison's maintaining power and descapement regulated by wood-rod seconds pendulum with cylindrical bob, the 9.75 inch circular fired white enamel dial signed JOHN STEGER, LONDON over subsidiary Roman numeral hour dial incorporating winding square within a cannon tube to the centre of the brass hand, the circumference with minute/seconds track and Arabic annotations counting in fives, with brass minute and steel arrow seconds hands within slender moulded brass bezel to outer edge, the case with cavetto moulded break-arch cornice over full-width hood door inset with glazed circular dial aperture hinged to enclose conforming mask around the dial, flanked by fluted canted angles and moulded rectangular blind panels to sides, the trunk with flame-figured shaped-top caddy moulded door over plinth base with concave top moulding over conforming raised panel to front and moulded double skirt.186cm (73,25ins) high excluding finials, 44.5cm (17.5ins) wide, 24cm (9.5ins) deep.A John Steger of London appears not to be recorded in the ual sources as working in London during the latter part of the 18th century however a John Stegar is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London 1699-1729 and a John Matt. Steger is noted as dying in Furth (Bavaria) in 1791. From these records it is perhaps reasonable to suggest that the latter may have had connections with London hence may have well been in a position to supply a London-made clock to a local German client.
