Circa 618-907 AD A finely modelled figure in representation of a foreigner groom which has been skilfully crafted, standing on a square-shaped base, his body angled to the right with hands delicately positioned as if he was holding reins to a camel, his facial details are exquisite, with a highly stylised textured beard, his mouth is slight ajar, a moustache with two pointed ends, a bulbous pointed nose, ever watching radiant eyes, and extravagant prominent brows. Depicted with a bulbous-shaped belly with remnants of red pigment, he is wearing a loosely fitted coat, with an area of exposed skin below his belt. His head adorns a cloth cap tied around his hair painted in a still vibrant blue. This piece has been precisely dated by means of a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. The TL certificate with its full report will apany this lot. Size: L:555mm / W:260mm; 6kg Provenance: East Anglian private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
