Drawing on "documents from Churchill's private papers, the book as a whole was a stupendous narrative of the war in Europe featuring masterly set-piece accounts of major battles. Dictated to secretaries as he strode up and down the room, it exhibited his passionate interest in war and his romantic conception of the 'true glory' of the troops who perished on the Somme" (ODNB).Provenance: Volume 5, Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax (known as Lord Irwin from 1925 to 1934), inscription from Churchill and bookplate. Halifax/Irwin had a long association with Churchill, having been appointed Under-secretary for the Colonies under Secretary of State Winston Churchill in Lloyd George's coalition government in 1921. In the 1930s he was instrumental in the policy of appeasement to Germany, and with Neville Chamberlain brokered the Munich Agreement. When this led to the downfall of Chamberlain as Prime Minister Halifax supported the cause of Churchill to replace him.
