MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURYThe bulbous body raised on three slightly everted feet, the crenellated rim elegantly shaped with lappets, painted in monochrome puce with three medallions to the side and a band of scrolling clouds below, the circular panels enclosing scenes of many yokai, the oni and other monsters depicted holding banners, weapons and other implements whilst running haphazardly, on a moulded sayagata (key fret) ground, the base inscribed Makuzu gama Kozan sei, 11.7cm.Provenance: from an English private collection, London.See the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, access. no. 93.3.111 for a pair of vases attributed to Makuzu Kozan featuring panels painted in puce on a moulded key fret ground.
