Furtwängler, A., Olympia. Die Ergebnisse der von dem Deutschen Reich veranstalteten Ausgrabung Band 4. 2 Bände (Textband, Tafelband), Asher, Berlin, 1890, pl.LXIV, nos.1076, 1079, 1082. 185 grams total, 17-48 mm (5/8 - 1 7/8 in.) Ex private collection, 1980s. Acquired on the UK art market in the 1990s. Arrowheads were very simple to produce, that's why they were produced in large quantities and with different techniques; the simplest consisted of creating an impression of the desired shape in two pieces of wet clay. The two dried blocks, if correctly assembled, made it possible to create numerous copies from a single matrix. The limit in the use of the moulds was that of deformation and the deterioration of the shape, if repeatedly used. Another technique was that of lost wax casting which, widely used in the Near East from the fourth millennium B.C., allowed to save and reuse the matrix.
