A PAIR OF GOLD AND BLACK LACQUER HOKAI, COVERED FOOD CONTAINERSJapan, late Edo period (1615-1868)Each of cylindrical form, with ribbed sides, supported on four tall spreading feet, decorated overall in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with peony flowers on scrolling leafy vines against a black ground, the edges and feet with shaped gilt metal fittings engraved with scrolling foliage. The inside of the lid is decorated with the "Noshi" design, symbolizing prosperity.HEIGHT 45 cm eachCondition: Overall good condition with some surface wear and scratches, notches along the edges and small chips to the lacquer.
