SOTETSU: A RARE SET OF TWO LACQUER BOXES, EARLY TAISHO PERIODBy Sotetsu X (1862-1926), signed Sotetsu XJapan, dated 1922. Consisting of a suzuribako (writing box) and a ryoshibako (document box), the cover finely lacquered in takamaki-e, depicting the three fierce looking noh masks Hannya, Hakushikijo and Beshimi. The interior of the suzuribako decorated with symbols of the Takasago couple: a broom, rake with a pine tree, and a cart for flower arrangements, referring to the elderly woman and man of the Takasago noh piece. The interior of the ryoshibako decorated in silver sprinkled lacquer. Both boxes with rims executed in silver. The water dropper made of silver with a hallmark on the bottom.Provenance: Dutch private collection.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, light surface scratches, minuscule chips, and nicks.Dimensions: 26.5 x 23.5 x 4.7 cm (suzuribako), 42 x 33 x 16.5 cm (ryoshibako)With two wooden boxes (4).
