HOZAN: A WOOD NETSUKE OF EMMA-OBy Hozan, signed HozanJapan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)The finely carved wood mask netsuke depicting the king of hell Emma-O with a fierce facial expression and distinct features with furrowed eyebrows, large bulging eyes double-inlaid with mother-of-pearl and dark horn, his mouth wide open, and wearing the classic Chinese judge's cap with the engraved symbol 王 for king on the top. The backside with two asymmetrical himotoshi and the incised signature HOZAN.HEIGHT 5.9 cmCondition: Good condition with minor traces of wear and age, the dark horn inlay on his left eye missing.
