A FINE KATANA WITH STAG ANTLER AND SHINCHU KOSHIRAEJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912)The blade:Shinogi-zukuri with iori mune, the hamon is sambon-sugi and gunome with nioi, the hada is masame.The mounting:The habaki of copper with horizontal filing marks. The shinchu (brass) tsuba of mokko-gata shape, the tsuka of stag antler framed with shinchu, carved depicting figural scenes, copper details and accentuated with tokugawa mon crests. The kashira and fuchi of shinchu. The saya also of carved stag antler depicting warriors separated by shinchu braces with tokugawa mon.TOTAL LENGTH 110 cm (the koshirae)Condition: The blade is in good condition with a few minuscule nicks, fukure and wear. A piece of shinchu reattached and glued back at the tsuka, minor material loss to stag antler carvings.Provenance: Austrian private collection.
